Sadly, this is not even remotely fictional.
A friend of
rm's, Soren "Scraps" DeSelby, is currently in hospital after having suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. He's conscious, and apparently lucid, but he's communicating incompletely (according to my friend, he's "communicating with people through eye motions, song and gesture") and his movement is significantly impaired. As of now, I'm told his prognosis is unclear.
Now, I've never met the man, but by all accounts he's a brilliant human being, stubborn as hell, and a hard-working freelancer. He's also, like many people who work in the arts here in the United States, uninsured.
He's been in the ICU since Monday of this week. To give you an idea, a day in ICU can start at well over $1000/day and run into the mid-to-upper thousands depending on the equipment necessary. So in addition to being terrifying for him and his loved ones, this is a huge financial blow for someone who works as a freelance copy editor.
I've always felt that, whenever possible, the creative community should look after its own. This is, I think, one of those times. If you've got a couple of minutes and a little bit of change, there's information over at Making Light on how to assist.
